Status Report | Part II, The DeviceSherpa Edition

Since the conception of DeviceSherpa I haven’t really solidified what I want the final result to look like, I’ve spent most of the time working on back-end functions and learning AJAX from scratch. This puts me in a peculiar place. I want this system to be actually useful to everyone, including myself, but I don’t have the expertise in user interface design to dive right in quite yet. If possible, I’d appreciate a vote in the polls (shouldn’t take more than a second or two) so that I can get some basic direction for the design. Right now it’s a stacked horizontal layout with no scrolling, the page currently doesn’t reload to display information, but I’ll have it setup so two devices can be designated through the URL for widgets, link-sending, and bookmarking. I use a dual-monitor set up with resolutions of 1280×1024 and 1280×768, so I’ve got plenty of screen to fill, however, I don’t think this is so common and if most people are using small resolutions still then I’d hate to make a kick-ass web-app that sucks to use for them.

Another question is that of home theater size. Between myself and the guys I live with we’ve got a few consoles, a receiver, top-box, and projector, so a simple two-device set-up only helps for any single link in the chain. If it turns out that most people do have larger media setups (Not just the TV and antenna, but game consoles and recievers) then I’ll gear the system to web out connections between all the devices, which I feel could help with end-user visualization and ease of use.

Also, if there’s any web-developers out there that would consider working with me on any of the Sherpas, or have a great idea for a guide web-application, leave a comment or shoot me an email, mseman at devicesherpa dot com.
